How Seniors Enhance Mental Health

At any age, we should not only prioritize our physical health but our mental health as well. Seniors may think they don’t need to consider their mental health in their “golden years.” However, older adults face changes in this new chapter of their lives that could affect them mentally, so learning to take care of your headspace is essential. Depression in seniors can be linked to increased chances of cardiac diseases and death from illnesses (Web Md). Your loved one can enhance their mental state by trying the following activities to improve health, social isolation, and productivity:

1. Exercise

Exercise not only benefits you physically but mentally as well. Older adults can maintain both their physical and mental health by doing at least 30 minutes of exercise every day. Doing a simple walk around the neighborhood or some yoga stretches can help your body release a happy hormone called endorphins. Exercise endorphins help reduce stress, improve sleep, and keep you happy. Make sure to consult a physician before starting any physical activity or fitness program.

2. Connection

According to Forbes, socially isolated seniors have a 59% higher risk of mental and physical decline than those who do not experience social isolation. It can be difficult for older adults to escape social isolation if they face mobility issues or are unable to drive. Make sure to accommodate your loved one, whether it’s through transportation assistance or connection via technology, so they can have necessary social interaction with friends and family to avoid loneliness. If older adults don’t find a way to combat social isolation, their health can deteriorate. AARP states the health effects of loneliness for seniors equals smoking 15 cigarettes a day.

3. Volunteering

Volunteering can bring the sense of community and life purpose seniors need to maintain their well-being. Being productive and spending time doing good for others with other like-minded folks can bring a sense of fulfillment to your loved one. There are many volunteering programs and organizations catered toward older adults. AgingInPlace provides ways for seniors to volunteer.

4. Spending time on joyful activities

If your loved one is in retirement and cooped up at home then it is the perfect time to do the hobbies they love! Having a hobby has been proven to benefit mental health. It offers that sense of purpose and fulfillment by giving you something to look forward to every day. We suggest seniors try an activity that brings them joy every day to improve their well-being. Your loved one can enjoy the rest of their life, knowing they are living their life to the fullest by trying all the things they enjoy but used to never have time for.

By prioritizing themselves and building a support system, seniors can uplift their mindset and maintain positive mental health throughout this new chapter in their life. You can read more 1+1 Cares mental health tips here.
