One of the Best-Kept Perks of Getting Older

Here's a happy little secret about aging: it comes with discounts. Lots of them. From travel to groceries to your tax return, businesses and programs across the country offer real savings to older adults, and many people never take advantage simply because they don't know to ask.

That last part is the key. Senior discounts change often, and many aren't advertised, so the golden rule is simple: always ask. Here are some of the best ones worth knowing about.

Travel and the Great Outdoors

If your loved one loves to explore, this is where the savings really add up.

  • The National Park Senior Pass: One of the best deals in America. Adults 62 and older can buy a lifetime pass to more than 2,000 national parks and federal sites for just $80, or an annual pass for $20. One purchase, a lifetime of access.
  • Amtrak: Travelers 65 and older get 10% off most rail fares.
  • Hotels: Many major chains offer roughly 5–15% off for guests in their late 50s and up. It varies by property, so ask for the senior rate and compare it to the best available price.

Everyday Shopping and Groceries

A number of retailers and grocery stores offer a senior discount day, often one specific weekday each week or month. The catch: these vary a lot by location, and some stores have quietly ended their programs. So the move is to ask at the customer service desk of the stores your loved one shops most, and find out if there's a "senior day" worth planning around.

Dining Out

Plenty of restaurants offer a senior menu or a small discount, but this is almost entirely up to the individual location. The simplest habit to build: ask before you order. A quick "do you offer a senior discount?" takes two seconds and often shaves a little off the bill.

The AARP Card

Membership in AARP is open at age 50, costs only a small yearly fee, and unlocks a huge share of the discounts above, from hotels and restaurants to car rentals. It also comes with a prescription discount card that can lower the cost of certain medications. For many families, the membership pays for itself the first time it's used.

Movies, Museums, and More

Most movie theaters, museums, zoos, and botanical gardens offer a senior admission rate, usually starting somewhere between 60 and 65. It's rarely posted prominently, so it's worth a quick question at the box office or ticket counter.

Don't Forget Taxes and Monthly Bills

Some of the biggest savings aren't at the register at all:

  • A bigger tax break at 65: Taxpayers 65 and older get an extra standard deduction on top of the regular amount. And for tax years 2025 through 2028, there's a new temporary bonus deduction of up to $6,000 per person 65 and older (it phases out at higher incomes). It's worth asking a tax professional whether your loved one qualifies.
  • Phone plans: Several carriers offer 55-and-up plans, though pricing changes often and some are limited to certain states, so check current options.
  • Help with essentials: For those on a tighter budget, the federal Lifeline program can lower the cost of phone or internet service, and many states offer help with energy bills. These are based on income, not age.

The Golden Rule: Just Ask

If there's one thing to take from all of this, it's that the savings are out there, but they're often invisible until you ask for them. Encourage your loved one (or offer, on their behalf) to ask "is there a senior discount?" everywhere they go. The worst answer is no, and the yeses add up fast.

A quick note: because these offers change frequently and vary by location, it's always smart to confirm the details directly with the business or program before counting on them.
